Description:
The largest accipiter, with comparatively long wing, with bulging secondaries and relatively short tail. Male has grey upperparts, white supercilium and finely barred underparts. Female is considerably larger, with browner upperparts. Juvenile has heavy streaking on buff-coloured underparts.
Distribution:
Uncommon passage migrant through the central and western parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Wide range of open woodland, scrub forest, wooded cultivations, oak and high-altitude coniferous forest, sometimes above the tree line up to 4000m.
Behavior:
Hunts from hidden perch or with inconspicuous surveying flight; prey mainly caught on ground, typically in clearings and around edges of woods. Hunts small and medium-sized birds and mammals, up to size of grouse, even hares; other vertebrates normally of minor importance. Not specialized, and relative importance of birds or mammals varies from one region to another.
